Steal Application Specific Passwords

Adversaries may steal Application Specific Passwords (ASPs) to gain access to [Valid Accounts](https://attack.mitre.org/techniques/T1078), bypassing multifactor authentication (MFA) methods. ASPs are passwords typically used to give third-party applications or legacy devices (which do not support MFA methods) account access.(Citation: Application Specific Passwords)(Citation: Application Specific Passwords Push Sec) An adversary may socially engineer a user into providing an ASP(Citation: UNC6293 ASP Creative Phishing Attack)(Citation: Application Specific Passwords Phishing) (using methods like [Phishing for Information](https://attack.mitre.org/techniques/T1598)), generate an ASP for an already compromised account,(Citation: Mandiant APT42-untangling)(Citation: TAG APT42) or obtain an ASP stored on a system. Afterward, adversaries may use the ASP to access [Valid Accounts](https://attack.mitre.org/techniques/T1078) and, in some cases, maintain [Persistence](https://attack.mitre.org/tactics/TA0003), bypassing any form of MFA set on the account.

M1017 · User Training

User Training involves educating employees and contractors on recognizing, reporting, and preventing cyber threats that rely on human interaction, such as phishing, social engineering, and other manipulative techniques. Comprehensive training programs create a human firewall by empowering users to be an active component of the organization's cybersecurity defenses. This mitigation can be implemented through the following measures: Create Comprehensive Training Programs: - Design training modules tailored to the organization's risk profile, covering topics such as phishing, password management, and incident reporting. - Provide role-specific training for high-risk employees, such as helpdesk staff or executives. Use Simulated Exercises: - Conduct phishing simulations to measure user susceptibility and provide targeted follow-up training. - Run social engineering drills to evaluate employ…

M1042 · Disable or Remove Feature or Program

Disable or remove unnecessary and potentially vulnerable software, features, or services to reduce the attack surface and prevent abuse by adversaries. This involves identifying software or features that are no longer needed or that could be exploited and ensuring they are either removed or properly disabled. This mitigation can be implemented through the following measures: Remove Legacy Software: - Use Case: Disable or remove older versions of software that no longer receive updates or security patches (e.g., legacy Java, Adobe Flash). - Implementation: A company removes Flash Player from all employee systems after it has reached its end-of-life date. Disable Unused Features: - Use Case: Turn off unnecessary operating system features like SMBv1, Telnet, or RDP if they are not required. - Implementation: Disable SMBv1 in a Windows environment to mitigate vulnerabilities like EternalBlu…

M1036 · Account Use Policies

Account Use Policies help mitigate unauthorized access by configuring and enforcing rules that govern how and when accounts can be used. These policies include enforcing account lockout mechanisms, restricting login times, and setting inactivity timeouts. Proper configuration of these policies reduces the risk of brute-force attacks, credential theft, and unauthorized access by limiting the opportunities for malicious actors to exploit accounts. This mitigation can be implemented through the following measures: Account Lockout Policies: - Implementation: Configure account lockout settings so that after a defined number of failed login attempts (e.g., 3-5 attempts), the account is locked for a specific time period (e.g., 15 minutes) or requires an administrator to unlock it. - Use Case: This prevents brute-force attacks by limiting how many incorrect password attempts can be made before…

M1018 · User Account Management

User Account Management involves implementing and enforcing policies for the lifecycle of user accounts, including creation, modification, and deactivation. Proper account management reduces the attack surface by limiting unauthorized access, managing account privileges, and ensuring accounts are used according to organizational policies. This mitigation can be implemented through the following measures: Enforcing the Principle of Least Privilege - Implementation: Assign users only the minimum permissions required to perform their job functions. Regularly audit accounts to ensure no excess permissions are granted. - Use Case: Reduces the risk of privilege escalation by ensuring accounts cannot perform unauthorized actions. Implementing Strong Password Policies - Implementation: Enforce password complexity requirements (e.g., length, character types). Require password expiration every 90…

DET0926 · Suspicious Acquisition and Use of Application-Specific Passwords
  • AN2077 · Analytic 2077 — Detect successful SaaS authentication through an application-specific or legacy credential mechanism from a source/client not previously associated with that account, correlated with new session establishment or subsequent access inconsistent with ApprovedASPUsage.
  • AN2076 · Analytic 2076 — Detect successful Office Suite access using an authentication method that does not perform the account's expected MFA flow, correlated within ASPActivityWindow with first-seen client/application access, an anomalous source/device, or an ASP-related account credential change where available.
  • AN2075 · Analytic 2075 — Detect creation of an application-specific password for a user account, correlated within ASPActivityWindow with authentication from a source, device, client, or location outside the account's established baseline, or followed by authentication using a legacy/non-MFA authentication path inconsistent with ApprovedASPUsage.
